Reds want Mal to stay

SALFORD bosses reckon they can persuade skipper Mal Alker to stay at the Willows despite reports linking him with Wigan.

Meanwhile, Karl Fitzpatrick is understood to be a target for the Warriors. But Reds intend to build a team around Alker.

Football director Steve Simms, who confirmed renewed Wigan interest in Fitzpatrick said: "We are hopeful Mal will stay on, we certainly want to keep him but as for Fitzy, I've heard Wigan are keen."

Wigan have stepped up their recruitment plans and have already snapped up Reds' GB forward Andy Coley on a two-year contract.

Millionaire businessman Ian Lenagan is expected to be confirmed as Wigan chairman early next week. He will head a management team that is expected to include former player, Joe Lydon.

Speculation is also rife that approaches could also be made to entice Andrew Farrell back to the JJB Stadium on his return from the Rugby Union World Cup from England.

Farrell could be earmarked for a key role within the club's support staff. It seems unlikely he will play again but he would no doubt be welcome back at Wigan.

Salford say finding a new scrum-half is the priority following Luke Robinson's decision to join Huddersfield.

Simms added: "We've no-one in mind but this is a very important part of our recruitment. We will have to see who is available both at home and overseas."

It will be great for Malcolm Alker to end his days with Salford City Reds.

Alker has been a very loyal player over the last ten years and I for one would really like him to stay with us......

As far Karl Fitzpatrick if Wigan Wariors come in for him...Wel you cant blame him for moving on.......

But like Alker it would be fantastic if Fitzy stays with us aswell.....

It's sad to see good players heading to greener pastures and you can;t really blame them. Salford are now faced with the task of developing a new team to get the necessary experience in the National League and then challenge for a place in the franchised Super league. The Super league should realize that a balanced league is essential to promote the game all over the UK.A draft system for players should be instituted not unlike that employed in the NFL in the US.Torred,Toronto
