Wigan in turmoil

Dave Whelan

WIGAN Warriors owner Dave Whelan is ready to sell the club after chairman Maurice Lindsay announced he is standing down at the end of the season.

The shock news comes just days after the most successful club in rugby league history crashed out of the Challenge Cup semi-final to Les Catalans and had four points docked for breaking the salary cap.

"I did not intend to sell but if Maurice has made his mind up to retire then it is probably timely for me to consider my own position here," said Whelan.

"I will now consider the offer but I am pleased Maurice will stay until the matter is resolved.

"I will only release my shares to someone who believes in Wigan as much as Maurice and I do."

Lindsay, 66, rescued the club from financial crisis and oversaw their glory years of the late 1980s and early 90s before becoming chief executive of the Rugby Football League.

He then played an instrumental role in the creation and the early years of Super League but returned to Wigan in 1999 soon after moved from central Park to the JJB Stadium.

Maybe this is could be the start of a new era for Wigan Rugby Club. I think we need to rise to St. Helens' talents and by doing that we need big changes. I just hope that the new owner will be passionate about Wigan Rugby and its history.

I think the JJB stadium should be demolished and replaced with a pie factory!

I think I speak for RL fans everywhere, other than Wigan fans (or maybe not?) that Wigan's current problems are a source of much joy for us all. Long may they continue!
