Darren Abram, who failed to emulate Goulding's success at Spotland, stood down after the club's 54-8 trouncing by Halifax on Sunday with the Hornets just one place above basement club Doncaster.
And Goulding said: "If the opportunity arose for me to go back to Rochdale as coach, then I would jump at the chance.
"I loved my time there. Rochdale are a very homely club. They have a smashing set of loyal fans and I greatly enjoyed working with the late, great Ray Taylor, who was chairman, and the rest of the board.
"I know I can turn things around again. I know the club and what happened before I moved on is in the past, it's water under the bridge. The fans know that I passionately care for Rochdale Hornets.
"I brought success, I turned things round and together we can do it all over again."
Goulding added: "I've just had an ankle reconstruction so I obviously couldn't play again this season but I greatly enjoy coaching and I got a lot of satisfaction from the job I did at Rochdale first time round."
