Winning his fourth Group One contest on the bounce, and handing all-conquering trainer Aidan O'Brien his 14th top-level success of the season, the 4-6 favourite gave his supporters a real scare inside the final furlong.
Duke Of Marmalade needed to show tremendous courage as Papal Bull headed Johnny Murtagh's mount close home, but O'Brien's charge found a shade more when asked by his partner to score by half a length.
As expected, the winner's stablemate Red Rock Canyon set a healthy gallop, with Lucarno hot on his heels in second during the early throes of the race.
Duke Of Marmalade was ideally pitched for Murtagh as they turned for home and powered into an advantage shortly after the two-furlong pole.
Although favourite-backers were probably counting their cash, Olivier Peslier had other ideas aboard Papal Bull.
Sir Michael Stoute's five-year-old was second-last as they straightened up but flew down the straight and nudged into the lead deep.
But Duke Of Marmalade added determination to his dazzling array of attributes to fight back in what was a magnificent tussle.
Youmzain, last year's runner-up, had to settle for third this time, some nine lengths further back.
Murtagh said: "I quickened up very well and was surprised to see another horse come with me.
"But my horse has got the qualities of being a great horse - he's a great battler and has a great will to win.
"The race worked out very well for me and to go nine lengths clear of the third (Youmzain) tells you what this horse is capable of.
"This is another huge win for me and for the team.
"He's one of my favourites, and one of the best I've ever ridden.
"He's a true champion."
