Bowls: David Walker continues Waterloo charge

David Walker flew the flag for the older brigade as he edged into the last 16 of the Waterloo Handicap at Blackpool, writes Steve McHugh.

The 65-year-old from Swinton pipped Failsworth’s Lee Lawton 21-20 to keep alive his hopes of lifting the sport’s most coveted title.

He is one game away from tomorrow’s finals day, with Burton’s Kevin Kelley-Walley standing in his way today.

Walker, who plays for Swinton club Borough Social, reached the Waterloo semi-finals back in 1982.

He raced into an 18-11 lead before Lawton launched a comeback to lead 20-19, only to play two loose bowls at the last end and let Walker in for a double.

Kelley-Walley ended the dream of 18-year-old Jack Hargreaves from Hyde with a 21-16 win.

Hyde’s Tommy Heyes, 66, led title favourite Graeme Wilson (Audenshaw) 16-14 before bowing out 21-18.

Nicky Brooks kept his run going with a 21-18 win over Billy Harding (Barrow).

But other Greater Manchester hopes Ryan Goodman and Clive Chapman (Heywood), plus Andy Buckley (Chadderton), were all sent packing.
