RUSS Richardson plays his last games for Manchester Phoenix this weekend after telling head coach Rick Brebant he finds it too hard to fit hockey and university studies into his schedule.

The 24-year-old, Salford-born defenceman spoke to Brebant after yesterday's training session in Deeside and the coach admitted: "It must have been a hard choice for Rusty. He has his studies and our training programme to fit in and in a few weeks he has a field trip to take and that would have meant missing at least two weeks of training and playing."

Brebant added: "We were just beginning to change his role, moving him into a forward position but, now we'll have to make different plans. I'd like to thank Russ for his efforts. He's been a lively member of the roster and we wish him well for the future."

Richardson said: "It's been a lot of fun and hard work and I really wish I could stay with the team. I've felt my studies suffering and my long-term future lies with them. I'd like to thank the Phoenix for giving me the chance.

"My last games will be against Sheffield Steelers tonight and at Basingstoke tomorrow and I'd like to go out in style."

Homegrown

Brebant said: "Now, as well as looking for another import forward, we will cast our net again for further homegrown talent. Any players wishing to try out for the Phoenix should contact me as soon as possible."

Phoenix host Steelers in the M.E.N. Arena with a 7.30pm face-off, before travelling to Basingstoke.

Two Challenge games have been agreed with FBNL team Newcastle Vipers. The Vipers travel to Deeside Leisure Centre on Saturday November 29, with the Phoenix travelling to the Telewest Arena on Tyneside on December 4.

Brebant said: "We decided to take the game to Deeside to give the folks local to our training facility the chance to see the team in action again.

"Everyone at Deeside has been very good to us and it's only right that we take the team there for a game."

Full details of ticket prices and travel arrangements will appear shortly on the official Phoenix web site as well as the FOMIH Supporters Club site
