ADAM Walker reckons the cancellation of Sunday's Elite League match against Basingstoke could be a blessing in disguise.

The fixture against the Bison was postponed just half an hour before face-off due to the Hampshire team's bus breaking down en route to Altrincham.

But with the British KO Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle coming up on Thursday, the Scottish forward believes the breather could do Phoenix the world of good.

"We've had a couple of days off now and it's good for the guys to relax before such a big game," he said.

"It was frustrating on the night because we'd gone through our normal match-day routines and had warmed up because we were told that face-off was just going to be delayed."

The game has been re-arranged for Tuesday March 3, meaning Phoenix now face a gruelling period of six matches in ten days: "It's not ideal," said the Scot, "it's another game we've got to squeeze in before the end of the season but we've had lots of matches recently and we're used to playing so often now."

The evening was not totally wasted as the 400-odd fans who stayed behind were treated to some exhibition hockey by the Phoenix squad: "We had some three-on-three games with Stephen Murphy and Adam Summerfield playing out and Nathan Ward and Josh Garbutt in goal followed by a skills competition. It was good fun for us and the fans."

Phoenix go into Thursday's match as big favourites to progress to the final with a three-goal lead to defend after winning 4-1 on Tyneside in last week's first leg.

"We're taking nothing for granted," said Walker. "Newcastle beat Belfast on Sunday which shows what a good side they are."
