SOMETIMES the hockey gods are in your corner and sometimes they are not.
That’s the way I looked at it after Sunday’s loss against Cardiff.
It may have looked like we were not trying from up in the stand during those first two periods when Cardiff went three goals up but I can tell you the guys were giving it everything they had.
Sometimes things don’t go according to plan. We made mistakes but the feeling was we gave it our all.
But we did break out in the third and the goals went in.
It was like a tug of war – they had us over the line at three nothing but we were tugging back in that third period and at one point I thought we would pull it back. Then we lost a goal off someone’s skate and it killed off our comeback with just a couple of minutes left.
We had better luck the night before in Hull. The big thing we wanted to get off our back was Tony Hand’s 4000th point and we did that pretty quickly.
It was good that they stopped the game when the goal went in and presented him with some champagne. That was really classy of their organisation.
But we had a job to do and it was a close game for two periods but we put our chances away in the third with hat-tricks from Luke Fulghum and David Beauregard.
We are on the road this weekend in Belfast on Friday and Cardiff on Saturday and we have our work cut out.
Belfast in my mind is the best team in the league. We have to throw everything at them to have a chance of beating them.
Outworked
They are a great team but they can be outworked like anyone else. Hard work can beat talent on certain nights so we just have to keep going at them.
We fly straight to Cardiff on Saturday and if we cut out the mistakes and bury our chances I’m sure we will get the result we need.
Brad Voth stirred things up a bit last week and ended up getting Kyle Bruce thrown out of the game.
It was ridiculous what happened to Kyle who said he thought Voth was trying to strangle him.
Voth is supposed to be quite tough but every time I ask him to fight he doesn’t want to know.
I think I one-timed him once and ever since then he seems to be shying away.
Tony’s not going to let us go up there and just reap vengeance on this guy. We want to be tough but we have to be smart.
We have to go and play our game and I’m sure if we get the opportunity we can go and get payback.
We had our first bowling tournament of the season this week. We picked names out of the hat and had four teams of four.
We put a bit of money into the pot and the winners took the prize and bragging rights.
Unfortunately my team came last. I reckon I’m a pretty good bowler but Lucas Burnett, Josh Garbutt, Adam Walker and myself just had a bad day.
David Beauregard’s team lifted the pot. That guy seems to just be great at everything he does in life.
He shot near 200 every single time and his team won it by a long way.
Tony Hand was in their team but he had to leave for a league meeting so whenever it was his turn Beau or whoever would end up bowling for him.
Now Tony is not the greatest bowler and I’m not sure the result would have been quite the same if he had been there!
Whatever the result it was a fun day out.
We have a new moustache boy. The monthly shoot-out came down to Alex Dunn and David Beauregard. Beauregard is our top goalscorer and everyone was cheering for him to lose. But he must have had the lucky horseshoe up his shorts because he pulled it out of the bag again.
Dunner has a full beard already so this time next month he is going to have one hairy face.
