The Brett Clouthier Column

Brett Clouthier and Jeremy Cornish getting to grips
I’VE been talking about fisticuffs in this column for the last couple of weeks but the trouble is I’ve been having a hard time picking a fight with anyone.

So when Jeremy Cornish came up here with Basingstoke last week I think I was duty-bound to give it a go.

I’ve been waiting for him and I know he’s game for it so I just said ‘Do you want to go?’ and he said 'OK’.

It’s no big deal.

A lot of the time I’m not allowed to fight him but Tony (Hand) gave me the green light. I was pretty happy to get the fans up on their feet.

And talking about the fans I hope they turn out in force for our game against Edinburgh on Thursday night (face-off 7.15pm).

This is a huge game for us because if we win we are virtually through to the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup and that will be a first for this club.

This is a monster game for us and probably the biggest of our season so far.

We’ve played most of the top teams and it’s weird saying Edinburgh is a huge game but it really is.

They are no mugs. Games are always close and they can surprise you.

Tony will want to beat them being from Edinburgh. We’ll dedicate this one to Tony.

Our fans are great fans and I’m sure they will turn up to support us.

Strong

Lucas Burnett arrived last week but you can’t really judge a guy on his first game. He was on my line and he looks like he has good speed. He’s a big strong guy and pretty good on face-offs.

It’s going to take him a couple of weeks to settle in and then we will see the true Lucas Burnett.

I made an appearance on the Channel M breakfast show this week with Adam Walker and Neil Morris. They went on early to talk about the team and the work it does in the community.

I guess they saved me for the entertainment slot at the end and asked me all the dummy questions.

But I like to be entertaining and we had a good laugh.

I want to help promote the club because a lot of people still don’t know there is a hockey team here.

It’s a big city and news has got to travel.

Ritual

I want to talk about our pre-game ritual. There is a solid group of us who play football to warm up.

It’s a game called Two-Touch. You can only hit it two times and you have to keep the ball up in the air.

It’s been a big part of our year and the guys look forward to that. It gets pretty heated.

I’m probably the biggest cut-throat out there. I fire the ball at guys to try and get them out and I’m probably the biggest target.

No 1 seed is Adam Walker but he’s a British kid and he should be good at football, although he’s a bit too cocky. The worst is probably Bruce Mulherin.

He’s got a sidewinder for a foot and he’s a horrible footballer.

Carl Graham is the worst header I’ve ever seen. He’s got a 50p head and the ball goes everywhere.

Who’s the best overseas player? No question it’s me! No one even comes close to me and I’m gunning for Walker – and Luke Boothroyd, because he’s pretty good too.

My wife Nicole is over right now so we went over to Chester the other day to visit the zoo and do the wall tour with Luke Fulghum and Bruce Mulherin.

We all bought England Rooney jerseys and then wore them when we ate our Canadian Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday night.

We call ouselves Team Rooney and we will be watching the England game wearing our jerseys and we hope he gets another two goals with that shaved head of his.

He’s our hero!
