Top prizes up for grabs at Charity Golf Day

Fancy a round at Wentworth with disc jockey Chris Evans and former England cricketer Ronnie Irani?

That’s just one of the prizes up for grabs at next month’s Amy Watson-Wright Charity Golf Day at Styal. It also includes sitting in with Evans on his breakfast show.

Evans offered the day out after Amy’s dad John met him at last month’s Masters in Augusta.

“I invited him to join us at Styal but when he told me he could not make it he made his generous offer,” he explained.

“Former United players Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole are playing and there could be other big names, including a European Tour star.”

Watson, who is based at the Cheshire club, has already sold 31 teams for the event on June 16 which last year raised more than £20,000 for the children’s charities Way Ahead and Childflight.

Part of the sum included £600 paid for a signed photograph from Seve Ballesteros, who died two weeks ago from a brain tumour which Amy, nine, also suffers from.

“She fine at the moment and she’s looking forward to the day,” said Watson. “She knew how Seve died but she just gets on with things.”

The event is supported by the PGA North Region, who are holding auctions for Amy’s charities and the Chris Hindley Memorial Trust at five nominated tournaments.

Davenport member Hindley died suddenly last year aged 36 soon after fulfilling a life-long dream to play the Old Course at St Andrews.

His widow, Joanne, gave birth to their second daughter, Chrissy, shortly after his funeral and the fund has been set up to help her and elder sister Niamh with their education.

MERE’S Charlotte Wild beat Curtis Cup players Hannah Barwood  and Holly Clyburn in the English women’s amateur championship at West Sussex before losing to 2&1 to 15-year-old Charley Hull, from Woburn, in the semi-finals.

HINDLEY Hall six handicapper Chris Lowe carded 66 at Great Lever & Farnworth to win the Bolton GA past president’s prize.
