Romiley to host Golf Club Challenge finals

HOME HOPEFULS: Erwin Klomp (left) and Peter Whitworth will represent Romiley at their own course

One of Greater Manchester’s premier golf courses has been chosen to stage the final of the MEN Media Golf Club Challenge.

The venue is Romiley Golf Club and the date is Sunday, June 6, when the first winners of this coveted competition will be crowned.

The climax of both the men’s and ladies tournaments will both be staged at Romiley and already more than half the field is known.

All 28 clubs who have entered the MEN Media GCC have been holding qualifying events over the last couple of months to determine their representatives in the betterball event.

Romiley is widely regarded as one of the finest and fairest parkland lay-outs on the circuit, enjoying wonderful views of the Derbyshire hills.

The host club have already found their teams to fly the flag for them on the day. Peter Whitworth and Dutchman Erwin Klomp, a 17-handicapper, took the honours in their own event, with Denise Booth and Linda Moore collecting the women’s prize.

"I suppose having home advantage must be some help but it all depends how you play on the day," remarked Peter, a 15-handicapper. "I’m sure everyone will enjoy playing Romiley. There are no gimme holes where, after a bad tee shot, you can still reach the green in two.

"The fairways are generous and the course is slightly undulating but not too hilly," he added. The Whitworth-Klomp combination earned 41 points over a 16-hole winter competition, edging out John Wallwork and Phil Cody (39) who beat Steve Brown and Dave Ball (39) on a card play off.

Denise Booth and Linda Moore finished with 38 points and had three points to spare over Anne Ludford and Marjorie Healey with Lynn Nuttall and Elizabeth Wilde back in third place.

Denise plays off a tidy 10 handicap with Linda off 18. "We’ve both only joined the club in the last few years and both work full time so it’s a question of cramming the golf in after work," said Denise. "We’d played together a couple of times before and now we’re hoping for another good round in the final."
