Captains take the spoils

The captains of Dunham Forest showed the way in the qualifying tournament for the MEN Media Golf Club Challenge.

Current Lady Captain Joy Blakey teamed up with immediate past Captain Fiona Berg to take the honours with 40 points and secure their place in the final.

It was a close run thing, though, with three pairs breathing down their necks, all finishing on 39 points.

Runners-up spot went to Sally Cohen and Heather Baron with Angela Thompson and Francis Cann claiming third place.

Yet again there was a handsome turnout reflecting the level of interest in the ladies section at Dunham where there are currently 120 members. The club are though on the lookout for young golfers wishing to play this magnificent parkland course.

  • Club champion Oliver Smith and partner Mark Davin secured a stylish victory in the Ashton-on-Mersey qualifier for the MEN Media Golf Club Challenge.

They clocked up a massive 48 points in the betterball competition, a score made more impressive considering 22-year-old Oliver’s handicap is just one and Mark, aged 24, plays off four.

It meant they pipped Paul Gibbons and Steve Maddox by one point with Barry Phillips and Pete Trafford back in third place on a card play off.

Going through to the final for Ashton in the women’s event are Gail Jenner and Joy Jones.
