Frank O’Brien and Gordon Travis are colleagues at the Trinity Mirror printing plant at Chadderton and teamed up to win the qualifier at Fairfield in the MEN Media Golf Club Challenge.
Their story is even more special because it was the first time they had played the new-look course at the Tameside club.
Fairfield has undergone a facelift in the last couple of years with three new holes added and three re-designed.
"No-one had been on the course until that day so it was nice to claim the first victory," admitted Frank who plays off a handicap of 10.
"Gordon, who plays off nine, and me are regular playing partners but our work shifts were different until last October so it was always difficult for us to find the time to play our matches."
The MEN Media event was staged as a double header with the Captain’s Drive-In with Tim Walker taking office. The winners collected 45 points with Jimmy Cooper and Paul Rutley finishing second on 43 points.
