For the first time visitors it is a magical mystery tour of the Cheshire countryside.
The design is such that each hole takes you in an unexpected direction and that is part of the attraction at this quality venue.
It can also be described as having a split personality, with two different characteristics to its lay-out.
Eight of the holes are on raised ground along the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal while the others are classic parkland close to the village. Such are the ups and downs of a game of golf.
No wonder Lymm has been chosen to play host to several prestigious events in recent years, including the 2005 English Seniors Amateur Open.
The club’s history is closely tied up with the building of the Manchester Ship Canal and the opening of the railway through Lymm which allowed commuters to reside in a pleasant country village.
The canal owners used their land on either side for depositing the spoil from the digging of the waterway which accounts for the elevated land which is home to holes three to 10.
Indeed, the club’s signature hole is the wonderful par five sixth which has the danger of the canal running all the way down the left-hand side. Sticking to the left of the fairway is the preferred option for the brave since it opens up the undulating green. Another intriguing hole is the tough par four third which justifies its rating as the second hardest hole on the course.
Lymm rebuilt the clubhouse in 2007 and its bright, modern surroundings make it one of the most attractive venues in the area. An improved practice ground is also planned.
