The quality of the putting surface matters to every golfer and at Hazel Grove they pass the test with flying colours.
The greens have all been re-laid to USGA standard, a feature that helps put the Stockport-based club in the top bracket of courses in Cheshire, and ensures they are playable for 12 months of the year without a temporary green in sight.
As well as the greens, there is much, much more to attract golfers to this beautiful well-appointed – and well-drained - parkland course. It is characterised by several natural water hazards, tree-lined fairways and a number of feature holes, each presenting their own individual challenge.
The third, a par five, ranks among the best in Cheshire while the pick of the par threes is arguably the 11th, both for its degree of difficulty and picturesque layout. But the signature hole is undoubtedly the 15th, dominated by a large sweeping pond down the left hand edge of the fairway and green.
At 285 yards, this par four represents the ultimate risk or reward hole. A well-struck drive can find the green, but out of bounds all along the right further concentrates the mind.
The chalet-style clubhouse, built in 1990, provides the perfect atmosphere in which to relax after a round of golf. There is a spacious lounge bar, members’ bar and spike bar which overlooks the 18th green and first fairway, ideal during the summer months for sitting out and watching players complete their rounds.
Hazel Grove also has a first class practice area on land that was the subject of a compulsory purchase order two decades ago. It was earmarked for the A6 bypass but after that plan was scrapped the only driving that goes on now involves golf balls, providing players with an opportunity to brush up on their skills.
Indeed, the challenge of the course, superb facilities and excellent cuisine provide players of all levels with a golfing experience to remember. Hazel Grove looks forward to welcoming players either as a guest of a member, a visitor, a society or as a new member.
