Players on the first tee can see for themselves the challenge of the 162-yard first hole which offers a taste of what is come.

And those gathered in the clubhouse get a perfect view of the 18th which ranks as one of the best and toughest finishing holes in the area.

Golfers are aware of the out of bounds that lurks at the back of the green, but there is also a danger of under-clubbing and running the risk of catching the steep banking or stream that guards the front of the green.

Many a costly double bogey at this enticing 157-yard hole has provided a sting in the tail to a round. By then, golfers will have experienced some of the most interesting holes through mature trees in the Manchester area.

Ellesmere is always carefully manicured and very well presented all year round. Along with a well established parkland course, Ellesmere has great practice facilities with a 330-yard practice ground, pitching area, bunker green, practice net and putting green.

Facilities off the course are of the same excellent standard with a modern clubhouse built in 1996 boasting well-appointed lounges, restaurant, function room and locker and shower rooms which were refurbished in 2006.

For those who do not know, Ellesmere is in Worsley and the club’s location is adjacent to the East Lancs Road (A580) prior to the eastbound junction of the M60 just 10 minutes from Manchester city centre. Pro Simon Wakefield has an excellent shop, offering a same-day repair service and indoor video analysis teaching room.
