England’s Ross McGowan won his first European Tour title at the Madrid Masters today - but only by three after taking a seven-shot lead into the final round.

McGowan followed up a magical 60 with only a 71, but his 25 under par total of 263 gave him the first prize of just over £227,000 and puts him second in Europe’s Ryder Cup race.

Mikko Ilonen, of Finland, came second and with that secured his Tour card for next season.
