NICK Dougherty knew precisely what he had to do to stay in contention for golf's biggest prize but admitted he could not live up to the task.

"My goal was to give myself a chance to win or finish in the top 10, but I got off to a bad start and simply did not play well enough," he said after a closing 73 left him on six-over-par.

"It was fairly obvious it was not going to be that easy because this is such a tough course, although I gave it my best shot.

"If I'd got to two-under I don't think I would have been that far away but missing a short putt on the first didn't help," he said as he picked up two bogeys on each loop, his lone birdie coming at the 17th.

The Shaw Hill tournament professional also revealed that despite working hard all week his mind set had not been great.

"To compete and have a chance to win majors you have to be really with it.

"I felt tired and in hindsight I should have taken a two-week break after winning in the BMW International in Germany. But we all learn from our mistakes and I know I'll come back stronger," he added.
