LANCASHIRE star Tommy Fleetwood is in a nine-man England side to face Spain in the biennial international at Sotogrande next weekend.

And Ashton-under-Lyne’s Matthew Nixon, whom he beat in a play-off for the Lancashire County Championship last season at Formby, is named as reserve.

Fleetwood, 18, hailed as one of the most exciting regional prospect since David Horsey and Nick Dougherty, made his full England debut at Muirfield in the Home Internationals last year.

The Formby Hall prodigy was also runner-up in the British Amateur Championship at Turnberry, won the English County Champions’ Tournament at Woodhall Spa – the first Lancastrian since Chubby Chandler 35 years earlier – in addition to his county title.

England have a fine record against Spain since the matches began in 1985. They sported an unbeaten record until 2005 when the Spanish won 15-8 at Puerta de Hierro.

England returned to winning ways with a 16-8 success at Royal Ashdown Forest two years ago.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood takes his place in the Southport GA side to take on the Rest of Lancashire in the season’s traditional pipe opener at Royal Birkdale tomorrow.

TIM Maxwell extended his lead in the race for the Manchester Golfer of the year title after winning the individual prize in the Alliance at Warrington.

The Knutsford professional hauled in 40 points to move 54 clear of Bury assistant Sean Doherty who is one ahead of long-time leader David Green, from Dukinfield.

And Blackley pair Julien Robinson and Alan Lane are on course to retain their amateur Order of Merit crown after topping the am-am section at Warrington with an impressive 48 points.

Davenport professionals Tony Stevens and Graham Cox plundered the top two prizes in the pro-am at the club where they were once assistants.

And Cox, paired with Fraser McLachlin, beat his boss Stevens, playing with host club amateur Matthew Fryer, a 44-point countback.
