What a celebration!

RINGWAY Golf Club began their club’s Centenary celebrations with the raising of their Centenary flag followed by the traditional Captain’s Drive-in ceremony.

There was a great turn-out of members to see the captain David Howarth and lady captain Liz Brook trumpeted to the first tee wearing golf clothes from 100 years ago.

They were accompanied by president Ian Berry and junior captain Tom Conroy who carried the Centenary flag.

This was duly raised by the captain and lady captain before the serious business of the drive-in.

Howarth and Brook both used ancient hickory clubs for their shots and Ian Berry and Tom Conroy teed off with modern clubs.

The club has a great programme of events planned for 2009, including a Marquee Ball on May 30 and a Centenary Golf Week from July 5- July 12.

Howard said: "It promises to be a great and memorable year, and many people at the club have put in a great deal of effort to set up this superb programme of events. We all hope for better weather in 2009."

Davyhulme Park’s men played a BB Stableford and in a close finish Paul Greer and Gordon Broughton won a card play-off on 42 points from Derrick Page and Bernard Rogers.

Jennie Page kept the winning habit in her family as she took top spot in a Davyhulme ladies’ 13-hole Stableford with 26 points, one clear of Lynda Lane.

Ashton-on-Mersey’s men played their ninth Winter League fixture and junior captain Oliver Jones paired up with A Calvert for a winning 46 points, one ahead of A Ashurst and M Cousins.

Mersey’s ladies played a singles Stableford and E Connor was first past the post from G Johnston and Z Hogan.

THE Manchester Alliance resumed the second half of its winter season at Bury Golf Club on a course that stood up well to the recent ravages of weather.

Alliance officials and players are hoping that the weather will give them a break during a busy second half programme.

The Alliance also welcomed a new sponsor in Matthew Cox of Ashworth, and amateur prize winners were able to enjoy taking away some of their products.

The pro-am winners were Cheadle pro Anthony Millar and his Lymm amateur partner Peter Colcombe with 41 points.

In a close contest, second place was decided by a cpo on 40 points going in favour of Ashton-on-Mersey’s pro Kris Andrews and Mel Phillips, from Denton’s dynamic young duo of James Lister and John Chaisty.

Local knowledge paid off in the am-am section as the home pair of Brian Lang and Graham Cross won a cpo on 42 points from Cheadle’s Matt Holmes and Andy Hall.

The prize list was completed by Withington’s Kevin Hawkins and Sale’s John Russell with 40 points.

Meanwhile, there is a unique opportunity for local golfers to check out the revolutionary new TaylorMade R9 driver at Scottsdale Golf in Sale.

The driver will be unveiled shortly before its public launch at Scottsdale on Thursday, February 26, at one of their customers’ evenings which begin at 6.45pm.

There is a great prospect of some top European Tour pros also being there on the night when new products from Titleist and Yonex will also be on view.

Scottsdale, who support WGTB Golf, will also be offering a number of other products as terrific bargains.

There are only a limited number of places available on the night so to book your slot telephone Scottsdale on 0161 969 4644.

If your club has a new captain or lady captain set to come into office for 2009, contact Geoff Garnett on either 0161 881 7550 or email: ggggarnett@aol.com.

Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until next March.
