FORMER Prestwich junior captain Nick Solski has been made golf director at the Le Meridien resort in Vilnius.

The 26-year-old pro said: “When I went over to see Lithuania, I was amazed to discover how beautiful it was.

“No expense has been spared on the course which opens in June and I’m overseeing the building of a clubhouse and driving range.

“It’s a great opportunity and I won’t have to worry about any language barriers because since the country broke away from the Soviet Union, English has been taught in the schools.

“Vilnius is similar to Prague 10 years ago and has taken over from Liverpool as the European Capital of Culture.

“There are only three other courses in the country which have not been opened long so clearly the game is growing in popularity.”

Solski qualified for the PGA after training as an assistant at Shrigley Hall, worked at Davenport for a spell and has been based at the Cranford Driving Range.

“I was told about Vilnius the Lithuania vacancy by a friend at Spain’s David Leadbetter Academy in Spain where I taught for six months.

“I met the club owner in London and he offered it to me on the spot. But I popped over to look at the place before I decided because it could have been a field of 18 flags stuck in it for all I knew.

“When I saw the course, built by a branch of the PGA, I made up my mind.”

Solski’s girlfriend Laura, a medical research scientist, is staying in Manchester for a year before joining him.
