LANCASHIRE player Tommy Fleetwood has been named in the 28-strong Great Britain & Ireland squad for September's Walker Cup against the United States in Pennsylvania.

His selection was based on some impressive performances last year when he also captained England in the Boys' Home Internationals.

The 17-year-old claimed the Lancashire County Championship by defeating Ashton-under-Lyne's Matthew Nixon in a play-off at Formby, having finished runner-up the previous season.

Fleetwood, a member of Formby Hall, went on to lose the final of the British Amateur Championship at Turnberry to Dutch player Reinier Saxon, where he had been on course to become the youngest winner, an honour held by John Beharrall and Bobby Cole, who were 18.

That was his one disappointment which also cost him an invitation to this year's US Masters.

He made his full England senior debut in Scotland and more success was to follow when he was crowned England County champion at Woodhall Spa - the first Lancastrian winner since Andrew Chandler 35 years earlier.

England also rewarded Fleetwood for his outstanding achievements by elevating him to the 15-strong Elite Squad.

The final Walker Cup team of 10 will be selected in August.
