ORDER OF MERIT PRIZE: Ashton-on-Mersey’s rising star Ollie Smith [left] has had a great first season on the Player’s Tour.

ASHTON-on-Mersey’s young golf star Ollie Smith has completed a fine season by winning the coveted Amateur Order of Merit in the first season of the Player’s Tour.

Professionals, senior pros and top amateurs take part in the Player’s Tour, competing for prizes at top courses across the region.

Ollie clinched top spot in the amateur section with wins at Denton, where he posted 71, and St Annes Old Links (72).

His Mersey colleague Oliver Pantoja won the amateur section at Ringway with a fine 70.

The Tour has winter pro-am competitions available for entry and a full programme for 2009.

Ashton’s men played for Keith Gregson’s prize and it needed a card play-off on 39 points to see Peter Hamlett home from Chris Haskins, with Andy Walker and Jeff Ashton a point off the pace.

Mersey’s ladies played for June Stronach’s prize and F Ramsden was first past the post on 24 points, one ahead of S Milligan and G Jenner.

Davyhulme Park’s men played a BB Stableford and Bernard Rowe and David Smith cruised to victory on 38 points, with Bernard Roger and Rick Edmondson next in with 36.

Park’s ladies were in Stableford mode and in division one Barbara Sadler led in with 28 points from Morag Hogg (27).

Apricot Choi was a clear winner in division two with 29 points from Elaine Mansell (25).

Davenport’s new assistant professional Graham Cox continued his fine form with a second straight win as the Manchester Alliance visited Shrigley Hall for a four-man team event.

With an individual score of 36 points, Cox finished a point clear of Bury pro Sean Doherty with third place going to Knutsford pro Tim Maxwell.

The conditions made life difficult for a full field of 30 teams who competed for prizes provided by sponsorship from Shrigley Hall former captain Mark Taylor.

Shrigley captain Brian Hopkins thanked the Alliance for holding the event at the club and invited them back next year.

The top team came from the amateur ranks, led by Alliance regulars Julian Robinson and Alan Lane, along with fellow Blackley members Duncan Teal and Andrew O’Neill with a score of 89 Points.

Second spot went to the team led by Bury professional Sean Doherty (85) with brother Ciaran in the team along with Phil McDonald and Gary Kelly.

In third place, with 82 points, was Tim Maxwell with his team of Peter Myers and Goodse Ahmed (Bramhall) and Mo Rawthore (Sale).
