THE De Frece Trophy, a long established tournament at Blackpool North Shore, has become part of the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit - the country's biggest scratch series.

There will be a record 30 fixtures next season, teeing off with the Southport and Ainsdale Bowl on April 25.

Lancashire player Mark Young, from Longridge, is hoping to become the first to win three successive titles.

Garry Boardman, a member at Stand then Castle Hawk before retiring from golf last year, was the inaugural winner in 1988 and went on to repeat his success five times over 11 years.

The series is used as a form guide for Lancashire and Cheshire counties and is recognised by the English Golf Union.
