FLIXTON Golf Club’s Men’s Foursomes team were denied a Manchester and District Alliance double, in a pulsating final at Bolton Old Links for the City Glass and Windows Trophy.
The teams were locked at 3-3 as Richard Fletcher and Colin Anderson of Marriott Worlsey Park went into the 18th hole level with Flixton’s Mark Evans and John Barrow.
Evans put his partner four feet from the pin and, with the Marriott duo missing their putt from just off the edge of the green, the tie rested on a putt for Barrow. The putt lipped out to take the tie to the 19th.
Fletcher banished a nightmare opening drive off the first tee as he blasted his 266-yard tee shot on to the front of the green, and his partner Anderson chipped to six feet.
Barrow’s chip left Evans with a ten-footer from the edge of the green but he missed narrowly and Fletcher kept his nerve to drop the putt to take the trophy, sponsored by Tony Cahill, back to his club for the first time.
Flixton, winners of the Dunham Forest Trophy, had to settle for the runners-up slot, having reached the final from an entry of 86 clubs.
