My failure to rely on common sense and a good old-fashioned A-to-Z resulted in a cross-country experience that almost snapped my car's suspension.
But I'm not the only one to have problems getting my route right around these parts - the newly refurbished course has had its fair share of trouble over the years.
The club first opened all the way back in 1909 on the site of Tweedale Hill Farm in Blackley, before moving to Henshalls Farm off Cooper Lane in 1920.
It remained there until 1998 when it was forced to move because of the new M60 motorway extension. It opened as a nine-hole course in 1999 on Back O' The Moss Farm, and in May this year completed its extension to a full 18-hole layout.
But having negotiated around the concrete monster that is the M60, Pike Fold had some slightly smaller customers to cater for as the designers finalised the layout.
Conservationists were keen that the local population of newts would not be too put out by lawn mowers and hacking swings, so some holes had to be plotted around their habitat.
Any time you see patches of wild rough dotted around the course, the chances are there are Newts About - the name of the 11th hole.
Better
Despite all the rigmarole, Pike Fold is in better shape than ever heading into its centenary year in 2009.
The new holes run from four to 13 but fit in seamlessly with the old, most of which provide an interesting challenge.
There is plenty of water on the course - including the brook that runs right through the middle - but overall it is forgiving from the yellow tees.
Things might change five years down the line though when the newly-planted trees grow and pare down the margin for error on many tee shots.
Club pro Grant Hamerton - a former European Tour player - is happy with the way the course is maturing despite a classic British summer.
He said: "It's settling down well even though the weather hasn't helped.
"The greens are very good, and the drainage has been improved on the new holes. One of the criticisms used to be that the ground used to get wet too easily but we've learnt from that and improved it.
Definition
"I should think the course will be where we would like it to be in three to five years, when the trees have grown and some of the holes have more definition."
The course is particularly strong from seven to nine, par three, four and five respectively. Seven is a fine par three with water down the left, while on eight you must fire your drive on an angle over the brook. The ninth hole is a challenging par five where the green is guarded by two ponds.
Hamerton added: "People remember holes where there are features, and the 13th is nice as well, a par five off the white tees with water guarding the left side of the fairway."
The course finishes with a fine dog leg par four that sweeps up towards the clubhouse - which boasts fine views over the course - where a welcoming drink awaits. After that, all that remains is to switch the sat nav off and head for home.
