Make the target smaller
Sometimes, when a player has holed a lot of putts on a particular day, they will say to me, ‘the hole seemed like a bucket today’.
And then on other days, when things haven’t been going so well, they tell me that the hole seemed like a thimble. Well, obviously the hole never actually changes size; what does is our perception.
So, if our perception has changed, surely part of the practice should be about shaping perception.
A great way to work on this is simply to take some time in your practice to putt to a tee.
Now just imagine, if you can hit that little tee, how big is the hole going to seem?
You can then focus on an imaginary tee in the middle of the hole when you are out on the course.
