Lancs wrap up title win

LANCASHIRE wrapped up their first Northern League title in 11 years but Northumberland made them fight all the way at Gosforth.

They were virtually assured of the title because of a far superior "goal difference" than nearest rivals Cumbria.

But skipper Bill Bromilow, with the Northern Counties Championship already in the bag, told his charges he would not settle for anything other than a win to preserve a 100 per cent record.

"We rallied to share the foursomes and were also pushed hard in the singles," he said after a 10-8 triumph.

The Red Rose boys today start their bid for a second success in three years in the English Championship at Royal North Devon.

Yorkshire finished bottom of the Northern League for the first time, losing to Cheshire.

GOLF was child's play for more than 100 Greater Manchester kids who swung into action during the StreetGames North West Festival at SportCity.

The five to 11-year-old were handed plastic clubs and balls to test their skills at Tri-Golf, the game's mini version of the real thing.

The Golf Foundation initiative, taken up by hundreds of schools in the region, creates and opportunity for youngsters to develop on interest in the sport. Diane Modahl, former GB Olympic athlete, presented the awards.

StreetGames offers a diverse range of activities for youngsters, including futsal, tag rugby, Kwik Cricket, handball, StreetCheer, basketball, athletics, and taster activities include skateboarding.
