HOPWOOD'S Rachel Connor is leading British player in the European Girls' Team Championship at Murcar in Scotland after a second round 72 which she coupled with her opening 73.

Her performance ensured England finished top qualifiers with Germany for the matchplay stages which starts today.

Rachel, coached by tour star Nick Dougherty's dad Roger, eagled the sixth hole on the first day and traded two birdies for the same number of bogeys the next.

Sam Garnett, 14, fired a gross 72 to beat his twin brother Josh by two shots to win the Mersey Junior Championship over their home course Didsbury.

Best nett was a 64 by 15 handicap Sale player Ju Whan Han.

Didsbury also claimed the Mersey Shield by three shots from Sale.

Fond memories of Danny Harding, who died nine years ago soon after turning professional, were revived at his club Worsley during the Manchester Junior League memorial trophy which bears his name.

Peter Wright won the gross prize with 72 and his Worsley clubmate Mike Gill took the nett with 67 off seven handicap.

Catherine Roberts, from Westhoughton, finished second in the Pleasington Putter two shots behind Oxfordshire champion Tilly Holder.

Didsbury's Laura Thomas was second in the nett section.

Stand stalwart Neil Self won the North West Manchester GA Championship for the firth time thanks to a 67 at Whitefield.

Steve Capper claimed back- to-back wins on the Players' Tour with a seven-under-par 65 at Bolton Old Links.
