Stars show County class

ON TOP FORM: Kevin Kean of Ashton upon Mersey

CHESHIRE Golf Union have been preparing for the busy Northern Counties season with a series of matches against top opposition in recent weeks.

The squad have been put through their paces under new Captain Ron Harrison of Romiley, and at their heart are Kevin Kean of Ashton-on-Mersey and Altrincham’s James West.

Kevin has been one of the top players in the team for a number of years and James has been a valuable squad member of the A and B teams for a similar period.

James played for the A team against Lancashire B at Bromborough and at Matlock he was joined by Kevin for a comfortable win by 11.5-6.5 over Derbyshire.

James picked up wins in the foursomes and singles matches and Kevin was a key winner in the singles after being well beaten in the Foursomes.

They now look to see if they have earned selection for the opening Northern Counties match against Durham at South Moor on May 10.

Sale’s ladies continue to enjoy team success, their latest win being a 5-2 cruise against Knutsford in the preliminary round of the MDLGA Bell Cup.

Back at Sale they played in the Lady Captain’s Charity Stableford, in which June Cutler received Carol Broadbent’s top prize.

She had returned after a long injury lay-off with 31 points, one ahead of Jane Ashcroft, Jackie Caw and Sophia Casey. Sale Ladies also played a singles Stableford, and division one saw Hilary Tarleton warm up for the Cheshire championships with a winning 34 to finish ahead of Jane Ashcroft and Trish Alston by a point.

In division two, 34 was also the winning number for Jackie Turner after a cpo with Margaret Clarke, with Dorothy Anderson a point off the pace.

Sale are still looking to recruit new lady members, for whom the joining fee has been waived.

Sale’s men played the first round of the Captain’s prize and Rory Sullivan kept up his bright early-season form with a fine winning score of 64 to lead in from Michael Sallabank, Brian Peacock, John Newton and Malcolm Mackintosh, all 67.

Bramhall Golf Club dominated the annual battle for the Manchester Alliance White Cup at its traditional venue of Chorlton.

Bramhall pro Richard Green found an excellent partner in Carolyne George to rack up 39 points in the pro/am section, which also enabled them to take the coveted cup back to their club.

Next in were Knutsford duo Tim Maxwell and Janet Elkington, who won a cpo on 34 points from Shaun Doherty and Annette Gale of Bury.

Alliance regular and sponsor Peter Myers and his Bramhall colleague Lyndsey Webster made it a double for their club as they were runaway winners of the am/am section with 37 points, leaving them five clear of Aidan Royce and Yvonne Evans of Denton, with home pair Monica Parsonage and Steve Gill completing the prize list with 30.
