TIM Maxwell plans to use his victory in the Mansell Finishes Winter Series Order of Merit as a springboard to success in one of the four PGA North Region majors - including the MEN Manchester Open at Marriott Worsley Park.

The Knutsford professional had to settle for a share of 15th place in the final event at West Lancs but was still 204 points clear of his nearest rival Simon Edwards.

Ironically, the former PGA Cup player from Wrexham club Clays has been coaching Maxwell during the past six months and even gave him a lesson a couple of weeks ago.

"He didn't try to give me wrong advice," laughed Maxwell. "I intend to continue helping him."

Maxwell, who has helped Sir Alex Ferguson and several past and present Manchester United stars to get to grips with the game, said: "I've struggled recently and lost some of my appetite but this victory is just the incentive I need to move on to greater things.

"I've been playing in the region since 1991 but never won one of the big events so one of those is my target for this season.

"Ideally, I'd like to win the MEN Manchester Open because it's on my doorstep but I'd be happy with any of the three other titles."
