MANCHESTER Junior League, one of the longest-running of its type in the country, is looking for at least two new clubs to bring numbers up to the required level.

Secretary Alan Toone said: "Swinton Park have pulled out this season and Whitefield are looking doubtful but I'm also uncertain about a couple more.

"One club, with more than 100 young members, showed an interest then declined to join because they could not accommodate our fixture. Another said they did not have a spare date.

"That's a great pity because the whole point of the league is to give the kids a chance to play competitively at courses other than their own. After all, they're the future of golf."

Several professionals and county amateurs have cut their teeth on the league since it formed 32 years ago. But it is becoming an annual problem for officials to turn out a dozen teams - last year only half had paid their fees two weeks before the start of the season.

"One of the reasons is a shortage of junior organisers," said Toone. "They are essential but it's time-consuming so it's difficult to get volunteers."

WARRINGTON assistant Graham Cox joined forces with Matthew Fryer to win the first Manchester Alliance pro-am of the year at Wychwood Park with 42 points with Chorlton pair Matt Sellors and Liam Harrison tacking up 39 to claim second.

Former Wolves and Burnley player Steve Kindon will be guest speaker at the Alliance annual dinner at Altrincham's Cresta Court Hotel on March 7.

ADLINGTON Golf Centre trainee professional Daniel Haughian has been appointed Nike's regional ambassador.

MACCLESFIELD member Alison Davidson is Northenden's new secretary manager.
