Fay Pye decided to shorten her putter on the eve of the event and ended up winning a VIP trip to the Ryder Cup, along with partner Pam Evans.

A total of 28 clubs will battle it out at Romiley in the finals of the MEN Media Golf Club Challenge.

The pair won their own club competition, beating Tom Griffiths and Trevor Hill into second place to earn the right to represent the Hale Barns outfit in the climax to the event.

Glyn Andrew and Dave Bridden used to play for the New Inn pub in Ashton under Lyne until they got too old and decided to take up golf.

The first winners of this coveted competition will be crowned at Romiley Golf Club on Sunday, June 6.

Frank O’Brien and Gordon Travis are colleagues at the Trinity Mirror printing plant at Chadderton and teamed up to win the qualifier at Fairfield in the MEN Media Golf Club Challenge.

The venue is Romiley Golf Club and the date is Sunday, June 6, when the first winners of this coveted competition will be crowned.

He paired up with 10-handicapper Stephen Jackson to rattle up 48 points and beat Alan Stoker and Gary Grimshaw by one point.

Golf has been enjoyed at Worsley for more than a century and the course was designed by famous golf architect James Braid.

The course is sandwiched between housing developments in Tameside so the club seized the opportunity to sell off some land to turn the plans to their advantage.

Turton is a quarter of a mile north of the famous Last Drop village in Bromley Cross and despite its proximity to the countryside is close to major motorway links. It combines both moorland and parkland to provide a magnificent test of golf.

There has been substantial development of the course over the years and although comparatively short by modern standards this beautiful parkland track offers natural hazards and undulation.

It was a bold move but showed the ambition at this traditional South Manchester course.

The greens have all been re-laid to USGA standard, a feature that helps put the Stockport-based club in the top bracket of courses in Cheshire, and ensures they are playable for 12 months of the year without a temporary green in sight.

Players on the first tee can see for themselves the challenge of the 162-yard first hole which offers a taste of what is come.

From the entrance it may even be possible to reach junction 24 of the M60 if you took your driver out of the bag, yet this superb set up is strategically and discreetly placed so that the motorway seems like a million miles away.

This historic venue oozes character and charm and provides a comprehensive range of dining and bar facilities, including the sun lounge and balcony where it is fun to watch the action at the short par 18th with its intriguing dog leg.

However, nothing could be further from the truth with this parkland course situated on the valley floor between Chapel and Whaley Bridge with beautiful views of the peaks and ridges.

A dramatic transformation to the course at Fairfield reflects the way the tide has turned in the club’s history, now well into its second century having been established in 1892.

The reservoir which acts as an intriguing backdrop to several holes serves as a reminder of once troubled waters when the club was threatened with closure because of plans for redevelopment.

The original course designed by John Bealey was modified by one-time Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, a renowned international golf course architect, to enhance its beauty.

In fact, the course lies north of Stalybridge in the foothills of the Pennines and is the oldest club in Tameside.

The course was surrounded by factories in its early days and their role in the Industrial Revolution was marked during the club’s centenary in 2008 with each hole named after a local mill.

The multi-millionaire footballers of Manchester United and Manchester City, along with the rugby stars of Sale Sharks, have their training bases barely a mile away.

Today we are launching the MEN Media Golf Club Challenge which is set to become the region's biggest tournament in 2010.

The Stockport-based club already have big plans off the course after buying 40 acres of land for redevelopment. Options include a driving range, new clubhouse or a revamp of their highly-rated course which lies on the edge of the Derbyshire hills.

Its appeal also stems from the friendly nature of the members whose claim that it is one of the best courses in the area is not wide of the mark.

They have a vision at Romiley and not just of the Derbyshire hills which stretch away into the distance as you set off from the first tee.
