Mahon will be joining Wigan until the end of the season.
Latics manager Paul Jewell believes the Irishman will add quality to the left side of midfield and increase attacking options.
Jewell is expecting a tough test at Portman Road against Joe Royle's side.
Jewell said: "A lot of rubbish was spoken at the start of the season about Joe possibly getting the sack.
"He couldn't buy a win but Ipswich are now up there and they are playing good football."
If Mahon's deal is completed on time, he will deputise for Lee McCullough.
Peter Kennedy and Steve McMillan are also contesting the left-back spot.
Midfielder Jimmy Bullard said: "It's a massive game. There could also be plenty of goals but we're quietly confident."
