Preview: Reading v Wigan Athletic

PAUL Jewell is set to stick to the starting 11 that destroyed Crystal Palace against Reading tomorrow, but the squad knows that competition for places is only going to increase.

The Latics boss is keen to strenghten his side and having missed out on Peterborough's Leon McKenzie is running the rule over Mansfield Town's highly-rated winger Liam Lawrence.

Rotherham have this week had a bid turned down for Lawrence who has been in impressive form for Keith Curle's team.

Jewell is keen to bolster his squad by bringing in another quality midfield player to sustain a serious challenge for promotion to the Carling Premiership.

Latics have been linked with a couple of Mansfield players in recent weeks, but Lawrence is the one to be checked out by club bosses.

Target

Liam Ridgewell, 19, a talented young centre half at Aston Villa is another player attracting interest from Wigan.

His progress has been closely monitored in recent weeks at reserve team level.

Latics are unchanged for tomorrow's touch trip to Reading whose squad includes former Manchester City favourite Shaun Goater.

Nathan 'Duke' Ellington expects few favours from Reading but is confident Wigan can pick up three more points.

Duke, a two-goal hero in the win over Crystal Palace, says: "It won't be easy but we're looking to build on last week's good win and certainly have the ability to beat Reading."
