"I first asked Kevin Keegan about Darren's availability last season," Jewell said.
"He was also discussed when we were linked with Shaun Goater but his wages meant he was out of our bracket but nothing came of it.
"Huckerby is quick and he's always a handful while Norwich are a good side."
Same again
Jewell sticks with the starting XI who earned a point at Cardiff in midweek.
Steve McMillan again deputises for Lee McCulloch, who will be out for two weeks after sustaining a head injury at Coventry last week.
Jewell said: "We could be in for a very good game. We are going well but we just need a bit more quality and belief in the final third of the pitch."
Wigan know that they have to beat Norwich to stay in touch with the chasing pack.
Jewell added: "We continue to learn but defeat hurts us here."
"There is no secret to what we do - it's simply hard work and good organisation.
"To avoid losing you have to defend properly and we are heading in the right direction but I again stress no one is getting carried away."
