Latics closing in on Ellington

NATHAN Ellington is set to rejoin Wigan Athletic from West Brom in the next 48 hours.

Paul Jewell wants an extra striker, and has offered é2m for Ellington.

But Albion chairman Jeremy Peace is holding out for the full é3m he paid when signing Ellington - nicknamed `the Duke' - from the Latics in 2005.

Ellington has told Albion he is desperate to leave The Hawthorns, where he has become disillusioned after failing to make the starting line-up. According to the Duke's adviser Tony Finnigan, the striker believes he can kick start his career with a return to Wigan.

Jewell tried to re-sign Ellington earlier this summer but Albion would not sell.

Wigan are in desperate need of extra fire power and believe Ellington can fire the goals to secure the club's Premiership status.

Injury

They have lost their last five home games and stand one place above the final relegation place.

Jewell said: "We badly need another striker. Emile Heskey needs someone to partner him and Henri Camara is out with a knee injury. We need someone in pretty quickly.

"Maybe we need to go back to the basics because we are conceding too many goals. We need leaders, because I said all along this was going to be a hard season."

Preston's David Nugent has also been linked with a move to the JJB Stadium, but he looks set to see out the season at Deepdale.

Jewell is only an outside bet to sign Birmingham City's England centre-back Matthew Upson, but is keen to bring in an experienced central defender and a midfield playmaker.

Meanwhile, Andrew Webster is being linked with a return to Scotland after failing to hold down a first-team place at Wigan.

The Scotland international centre-back, who joined the Latics from Hearts in the summer, is believed to be interesting Rangers, while Celtic have also been keeping an eye on him.

Who would you like to see Wigan go for? Have your say.
