Wigan step up bid for Savage

WIGAN Athletic are poised to make a é3m bid for Blackburn star Robbie Savage - despite being told that the Welsh international is not for sale.

Rovers' boss Mark Hughes is adamant that Savage remains a key figure in his plans for the new season.

But Latics' manager Paul Jewell is reluctant to take no for an answer.

He is desperate to bolster his midfield, and, having lost Jimmy Bullard to Fulham, he knows that Savage has the experience he requires. And the player himself is believed to be keen to talk to Wigan.

Wigan, who have just sold striker Jason Roberts to Rovers, are also close to completing the signing of Dutch World Cup player Denny Landzaat from AZ Alkmaar.

Spanish clubs Seville and Espanol have been chasing Landzaat, but Wigan are still very much in the hunt for the 31-year-old midfielder - who is highly rated by Wigan's Dutch skipper Arjan De Zeeuw.

Wigan are also in talks with Liverpool to sign England Under-21 keeper Chris Kirkland.

The departure of Roberts has highlighted the need for a quality striker, andJewell has been linked with Brondby's Swedish international Johan Elmander.

Wigan have asked to be kept informed by West Brom of any transfer developments involving former player Nathan Ellington and midfielder Zoltan Gera.

They have also checked out Birmingham striker Emile Heskey.

No way do we want him playing for Wigan. He is a liability; gets booked almost every match he plays and also he winds up the opposition so much that they raise their game, and become harder to beat.
