I'm off, Jason tells Latics

STRIKER Jason Roberts has rocked Wigan Athletic by saying that his future lies away from the JJB Stadium.

The 28-year-old's outburst came after talks broke down on a new deal with the club and Roberts is now interesting Turkish side Besiktas.

Roberts, who has a year left of his current deal, said: "I was offered a new contract by Wigan about a month ago that was totally unacceptable. It seems my future lies elsewhere."

Roberts was the club's top scorer last term as the Latics finished 10th in their first season in the top flight.

His goals helped them to the League Cup final, where they lost to Manchester United, but he is unhappy with the Latics' attempts to keep him.

He added: "I'm disappointed with the way things have gone but that's down to the club.

"For me it's over, the club have treated me in a manner I think is disrespectful. I don't feel as if I have been treated the way I should have been treated, but it's time for me to move on.

Opportunity

"It seems as if the club wants to go in another direction, which is fine.

"I just want the opportunity to get on with my career.

"I've had a great time at this club. We've had a fantastic season and I think I played a big part.

"There's been no fall out as far as I'm concerned. We've had a fantastic season - the best season this club has ever had and I'd like to think I was a big part of that."

The Grenada international joined Wigan in January 2004 from West Brom for é1.4m.

In his first full season at the club he scored 21 goals as they gained promotion to the Premiership for the first time in the club's history.

WHAT's your view on Jason Roberts' potential move? Have your say.

To say the club has been disrespectfull to him is a joke. The club have offered him a deal and he chooses not to except thats up to him, i think making him captain last season showed him a lot of respect and did he show the club any when he turned his car around on the M6 and went and signed for Portsmouth. Footballers mentality amazes me

Roberts is getting to big for his own boots...Like some of the other Latics players he is starting to believe his own publicity.

City sign him up we could do with someone like him around the club ??? and also it would allow Vassell to play on the right wing.

Roberts is asking for ??25k-30k a week, yet only scored 8 Premiership goals last season.

Darren Bent scored 20+ at Charlton and his new deal only amounts to ??28k!

Latics will pay big money for proven quality, not average Premiership players who believe one half decent season makes you a superstar.
