Wigan boss Paul Jewell will get just four days holiday this summer as he strives to improve on a season he describes as éthe best of my career.é
Jewellés search for the eight players he wants to strengthen his squad is already well under way, with Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson his number one target.
Jewell has vowed to leave no stone unturned in his bid to ensure the Laticsé second season in the Barclays Premiership next term at least matches their debut campaign.
Wigan eventually finished 10th when many pundits expected them to be relegated, while they also reached the final of the Carling Cup.
But Jewell knows if Wigan are to continue to build he cannot afford to take off too much time.
éI wonét get too much of a break, maybe four days,é revealed Jewell.
éI certainly wonét get a family holiday. I didnét get one last year either, but thatés life.
éIém playing golf for a few days, Iém going to the World Cup, and then Iém on a coaching course in sunny Aberystwyth.
éSo ités a very short holiday for me, although I donét think holiday is the right word.
Satisfaction
éAs a manager you never stop because youére always trying to improve your team and your club. Even when you are on holiday, as any manager will tell you, your mind is always on the job.
éBut I have to admit, Iém ready to forget about league football for a couple of weeks.é
Jewell is at least able to reflect on Wiganés season with pride and satisfaction.
éThe season was a great adventure,é he added. éIt was really intense and tough, and weéve had to be at our best every day, never mind every match.
éIt took its toll, but that was to be expected as our performances and results tailed off.
éI felt in the last few games we still played some great football, we just didnét get the results.
éBut I have to say it has undoubtedly been the best season of my career, a wonderful season.
éWe donét have a trophy to show for it, but that sometimes doesnét tell the true story.
éChelsea are champions, Liverpool or West Ham will win the FA Cup, while Manchester United won the Carling Cup.
éBut Iém biased, and for me, what my players have achieved is on a par with what any other team has done.é
Do you think Wigan can get Johnson? Have your say.
