Chimbonda holds World Cup hope

WIGAN defender Pascal Chimbonda is hoping for a late call-up from France coach Raymond Domenech ahead of this summer's World Cup.

The 27-year-old full-back was voted into the Professional Footballers Association's Premiership XI by his peers after a superb season with Wigan, and the former Bastia and Le Havre man now believes he is ready to prove himself at the next level.

"I believe I have a chance to go to the World Cup, and I am desperate for it to happen," he told L'Equipe.

"If I was voted the best defender (in the Premiership) it shows that I play at the right level.

"The national coach has said that the door remains open for new players, so why not me?"

Chimbonda, who is uncapped, has started 35 matches for Wigan this season, scoring twice.

Do you think Chimbonda is good enough to get into the France squad? Have your say.

Chimbonda should definitely be considered by Raymond Domenech's staff. He proved it against the best offensive players and can contribute right away. The French team needs to be strong on defense if they want to have a chance to advance into the world cup.
