Wigan smash ticket record

PREMIERSHIP newcomers Wigan Athletic have smashed their season ticket sales record in the first three hours of trading.

Tickets went on sale at 9am, and already almost 7,000 have been sold as supporters are eager to see the Latics take on the big boys in their first season in the top flight.

It is estimated at least 10,000 will be sold, easily outstripping the previous best mark of 4,700 ahead of last season's Coca-Cola Championship campaign.

Delighted chairman Dave Whelan said: "This is a momentous day for the club and the town of Wigan.

"People have always questioned our supporter base, but I was confident the interest in the town was there if we could provide top-flight football.

"We've kept our prices reasonable and people are flocking to the JJB Stadium to make sure they can watch Premiership football in this town for the first time ever.

"When you look at the fixtures we've got coming up this season it's no surprise that supporters want to guarantee a seat.

"The chance for Wigan folk to watch their team take on the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool is a dream come true and I'm delighted so many are signing up for the season."

Let's see how many season tickets get sold next year when the bandwagon has left town! All those so-called United, Liverpool and Everton fans that never touched Latics when they were in the lower leagues but are now clearly buying into the dream should be ashamed of themselves!

Re: loyal warrior

I sense bitterness in your comments. You're not getting worried that some of these people may be abandoning the sinking ship HMS super league in favour of your stadium counterparts are you?

Wigan Athletic should be congratulated for their enormous efforts in achieving Premiership status and hopefully all the "band wagon jumpers" [as you call them] will help to ensure that we are able to enjoy top flight football in Wigan for many years to come!!

Onwards and Upwards

How bitter are you thugby chump, still when you're facing relegation from the World renowned Super League you've got every reason to be upset.

Come on down to the Latics, most of your pals have!!!

I assure you there is every chance that there is no jumping ship from the greatest game to soccer in the town - the attendances for the glorious cherry and whites will prove me right. Those that turn up in there 2005 (one season only) Premiership shirt will not go home too upset when Latics get half a dozen put past them as the first love of most of these 'fans' will certainly be the bigger clubs that I have already noted and not Latics.

We will be here long after you have secured your lower league status once more so make the most of your glory days. As for any supposed Wigan RL relegation - more chance of Latics paying that police bill and adding a tip. I'll give Asda a miss from August as with Latics playing and your new found 'fan base' there'll be many more scousers in town.

It's good to see that your so secure in your club and the demise of Latics that you find time to read a Latics Football article and then feel compelled enough to post about it.

By all means carry on and further reinforce my comments.

For years now you and your ilk have supposedly been mis-represented by me and my clan standing proud as defenders of the Wigan faith - we were (indeed still are) everything anyone needed to know about our town. You have moaned that you are from Wigan but you are not rugby fans - when all the world believes the two go hand in hand. It is my duty to keep an eye on you children to ensure you do not, in the fun and games of your Premiership season, ruin all that we have built in our great town. Wigan will always be cherry and white.

Ha ha ha you really make me laugh you thugby men. Come into the real world, the number one sport in the world is football not your little eggchasing minority sport. I have supported latics all my life but have never ever sunk so low as some you worriers fans have. You have had your glory years (when every other team was part time) now let us enjoy ours. I look forward to you getting sick to the teeth of hearing about us from now on. Enjoy us being in the limelight :)

btw you don't work for the Wigan Evening Post do you loyal warrior ... they seem to have the same bigoted view of the success of the football team as you do!!

I suppose it's difficult when your map of away trips doesn't extend beyond the M62 corridor!!

Given your distaste for rugby league in general, can I take it you view St Helens RLFC fans with the same ample amounts of loathing as Wigan RL fans? I have been led to believe there are a number of game-going Saints fans who actively follow Latics and vice versa.

Loyal Warrior - for every time I (as a 14 yr old lad) was abused & mocked in the street by some over weight moron with pie stains down his out of date Ellgren jacket back in the early to mid 90's, for every time Robinson, Lindsay & their ilk sneered down their noses at Latics & claimed they would never allow the self proclaimed "world's greatest rugby club" be reduced to gorund sharing with their football counterparts, for every time the council imposed stricter ground regulations on Latics whilst allowing increases to Central Park's capacity without increased saefty measures and for every hate filled letter to the local papers wishing our opponents all the best in our big games & Wembley finals, yes for all those times your bitter, twisted rants are like music to my ears.
Long may it continue
PS - only lost coz of Sculthorpe cheating indeed??? The score was 40 odd to 18 - you got mullered by a far, far superior side

Loyal Warrior, whilst I admire you for fighting your corner, you are losing this battle (rather like your team loses it's battles). One cannot talk of RL and 'the world' in the same sentence. RL isn't even a 'Northern' game because the vast majority of Northerners have no interest in the sport. 'The greatest game' - surely an infringement of the Trade Descriptions Act! With regards to your jibes about Glory-Grabbers, EVERY club, no matter what sport, has them. The fact is Wigan Athletic are now in the ascendency and will be for many years to come. You must be sick of seeing so many Latics tops around town. The number of kids who follow the mighty Athletic is far greater than those who watch the Worriers. A bit like the Tory Party, they have an ageing membership. The future's bright, the future's Blue and White!

Maybe you should knock our 'northern' status so much, given it's clearly one reason why Latics are finding it difficult to attract players from the big city/bright lights? As for Latics being in the 'ascendancy' then you might have more of a point if you lot prove competitive in the Premiership as short-term achievement counts for little in the scheme of things and could actually be more financially damaging in the long run. Those glory hunters of which you speak and the fact other clubs have them, I wonder how many that follow other clubs actually turn up to watch the opposition rather than the home team in its 'pomp'. Latics will not only be outnumbered by away fans but also have many of 'their own' who won't be that upset when the likes of Everton, Liverpool and Man Utd leave town with all three points. All those Latics-loving kids are still playing rugby league at school btw - I understand you have to rope in the St Helens kids because those in Wigan are too busy with their rugby? Nice comment about the Tory Party - I assume Latics are more like Community Action and will have their day but fizzle away after a few moments of glory?

' All those Latics-loving kids are still playing rugby league at school btw - I understand you have to rope in the St Helens kids because those in Wigan are too busy with their rugby?'

WIGAN HAS turned blue and will become a deeper shade as the years go by.

You see, although Latics will undoubtedly attract a few thousand glory hunters (as a Warriors fan you should know all about that), Latics have actually won the battle to convert the kids in the town into Latics supporters.

Almost every under 12 these days is a Latics supporter. In years to come they will bring there own kids and family to Latics games and our supporter base will grow larger and larger.

You'll belief (hope) that Latics will tumble down to the lower leagues with 1500 supporters is NOT going to happen. The ground work for our future, much larger supporter base has already been done.

Warriors fans have always been a small minorirty compared to Man U/City/Liverpoll/Everton supporters, I'm sure you'll agree.

In years to come 70%+ of the soccer supporters in the town will be Latics supporters, get used to it.

I have allways supported Bolton Wanderers and Warrington rugby league, both are disliked in Wigan. But the local area needs top flight rugby, and football , and derby games are a major part of it. If you are a Wiganer and you dont want your home town football team to succeed, i find that very strange. The town is big enough for the both of you.
