Stoke v Wigan: Preview

Victor Moses, looks set to hand Wigan an early New Year tonic by agreeing a new extended contract, writes Neil Barker

Moses is happy at the DW stadium and has told boss Roberto Martinez he is keen to stay.

He has been in great form for Wigan this term and could prove key to the club’s Premier League survival plans.

A further boost for the club is the increasing likelihood of Jordi Gomez also extending his contract.

Wigan travel to Stoke tomorrow still licking their wounds from a 5-0 Boxing Day drubbing by United at Old Trafford.

The club received a further boost after Conor Sammon’s red card, picked up in that game, was rescinded.

The striker was shown a straight red after a seemingly innocuous-looking clash with Michael Carrick.

The decision means Sammon is now available for Saturday’s game.

Martinez said: “We thank the panel for their decision, which is the correct one.

“It would have been unfair for him to share the frustrating feeling that he had on Monday for another three games after doing nothing wrong.

“I am delighted to have Conor available for the next three matches.”

Martinez cannot see much player movement during the January transfer window.

There is, however, likely to be outside interest in Columbian striker Hugo Rodallega.

Italian giants Juventus have been linked with a move for the Columbian.

Cultured midfielder Momo Diame has also been attracting interest.

Keeping Moses will however be a big plus for the Latics.

The silky-skilled and pacy midfielder is a player highly-rated by chairman Dave Whelan.

“Victor has been in brilliant form for us,” Whelan said.

“It’s a joy to watch him play. When we lost Charles N’Zogbia, Victor had to step up and he has turned in a series of outstanding performances.”

Martinez is fully expecting a tough test at Stoke followed by the visit of Sunderland to the DW.

Patrick van Aanholt could come back into the reckoning for the trip to the Britannia Stadium.

Key opponent: Ricardo Fuller- He'll be looking to score in this game

Prediction: Stoke 1 Wigan 2
