The Colombian striker was stretchered off in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Everton.
He could be sidelined for at least a month but manager Roberto Martinez was initially predicted a lengthier lay-off.
He said: “The scans came back really positively, it doesn’t seem there are any big concerns in terms of the structure of the knee.
“We won’t know how long he’s exactly going to be out but what’s clear is that the injury is not as bad as we first thought.
Wigan need a boost after successive defeats with chairman Dave Whelan claiming the Premier League is becoming tougher with each new season.
He said: “Early indications suggest it’s again going to be very tight in the lower half of the table for most of the season.
“Clubs are going to take points off each other and maybe 36 points could again be enough to secure survival. Every season is tough and the following season becomes even tougher as standards rise.” Tweet
