He's close to Messi, Maradona - Wigan boss praises Manchester City star Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez reckons new Manchester City signing Sergio Aguero is "as close to Maradona and Messi as your will see".

The Blues’ immense wealth and increased stature was immediately recognised by Martinez as a fast track to the dizzy heights of success.

And his sentiments are echoed by Latics chairman Dave Whelan.

Wigan travel to Eastlands on Saturday and Martinez is wary of the menace posed by City’s new Argentine superstar Sergio Aguero.

Martinez has seen Aguero excel for Atletico Madrid and three goals in his first three matches for City sums up the task facing Wigan.

Aguero's name has dominated Wigan's preparations ahead of the Etihad clash.

Explosive

“He really is the complete player and he’s probably as close to Maradona and Messi as you will see,” said Martinez.

“Aguero has the ability to play between lines and his winning mentality has allowed him to fit into the Premier League with no problems.

“He is explosive over the first five yards and defenders in this country will have a real shock when they see just how quick he is.

“Due to his style, City can play on the counter away from home and then be different at home - it really is a dangerous combination.”

Latics will head for Manchester boosted by their first win of the season by QPR.

But they will be without both Antolin Alcaraz and Steve Gohouri.

Wigan felt they did enough to earn a point in last year's clash.

They matched City in many areas but lost out to a single goal.

Chairman Dave Whelan recalled:  “We played very well there as we did on a number of occasions last year and didn't have anything to show for it.

“You have to make your own luck in this game at times. It's so competitive.”

What do you think? Have your say.

I like it when other managers pay respect to our team, quite often you only hear snide remarks, from the likes of gammon chops!!!

Whelan has got himself a great manager in Martinez.
Because they are a good side who play nice football I think we should ease up after 5.
Mind you, that still leaves the second half.
Balotelli hat trick yes please!

Yes he is Roberto and he is a City player and he is loved already.

Roberto Martinez is a good manager who is always fair and honest in his comments to the media, so such effusive praise from him is particularly welcome.

He's ok he is Martinez, one of the premier league managers that has realistic expectations of what his team can achieve and doesn't suck up to certain other managers. Having said that I rather think his side are in for a torrid afternoon on saturday but then I do remember it being a tough game against them at Eastlands last season so lets not be too complacent eh?

I think that Martinez is a good manager and an honest one as well. I remember on MOTD 2 when the little irish fella was trying to get him to have a go at us and how much we spent but all he did was praise Mancini for what he's acheived. The look on Hansons face was the highlight though....ha ha.....COME ON CITY!!!!

I don't think Kun will be playing in this game. He travelled half the world to play in the Argentina friendlies. I think that the front 2 will be Tevez and Balotelli with AJ to start as well. Nasri will play but SIlva will be rested. The three points will be difficult to get against Wigan and I could see us winning with only one goal, maybe 2-1. This is not an easy game and Wigan have been very good in the 3 games they have played.

It will be interesting to see the CIty line-up but since we are playing Napoli next, Mancini will not take to many chances. Anyway the Wigan game is therefore all about the 3 points and nothing else. But it's time that Balotelli got a game as well as Tevez starting. I would not be surprised if Mario got us the goals in this game.

Er no he's not Roberto

The incomparable Maradona is the greatest footballer ever in my book and Messi is by far the greatest player in the world today. These two are on a different plane to Aguero.

Sergio has great talent but nobody was saying he was nearly at Messi's level 3 weeks ago. Do a couple of excellent performances against Swansea and an underperforming Spurs really confirm him as an all time great.

I'm not one of the doom n gloom merchants on here but a lot of people are getting carried away at the moment. A bit of realism is in order.

whichever team we put out, with the strength in our squad now, Wigan are in for a torrid afternoon. I like Martinez, he is typical Spanish view on how football should be played, on the floor, passing and moving,as it should be, and if they play like that against us on saturday, we could run up a big score again. I think Mancini will make some changes with CL game on wednesday in mind, I can see the front 3 being Balotelli/Tevez/AJ, giving Dzeko/Aguero and Silva a rest, but even with these changes, we should be too strong for a Wigan team that have lost N'Zogbia and Cleverley this summer(2 of their better performers last season) and not brought in similar of better quality players. If City go out with the same attitude as they did the opening 3 games, 3 points should be ours

If we don't pick up 3 points against the likes of Wigan at home no way will we be lifting the Premiership trophy at the end of the season. We should be looking at taking 50 points at home and about 38 away. 88 points could bring us the title i sure hope so.

Will the sponsors be happy with you still saying "Eastlands"?

I'll put money on City having far less space to play in than we did at Spurs. Martinez is a very astute manager and always puts out a team that we find difficult to beat - if anyone can tell when we've ever thrashed them I'd love to know. Having said all that we have the superior players and should win. It's all about the players attitude on the day.

Messi is the best player the world has ever seen in my opinion, a joy to watch. However, Aguerro is also in that top top bracket of truly world class talent and if you ask me he is slightly better suited to the Prem than Messi because he has that extra strength in the upper body........

Look at his goals so far - they have displayed a range of talent, as have Edins to be fair, but Sergios goal against spurs, that movement and combination of close control and burst of genuine pace to beat Dawson, followed by a clinical finish, is why we paid 35 million. Opponents will know he can do that at any moment in a game that hangs in the balance and that will give them nightmares. He's a match winner and that's priceless............

Roberto you deserve huge credit for loyalty to Wigan, thanks for your kind words but we must win because we want to be champions

Yes, he's the best player in the world, next after YAYA!
What a week. Gary and his mailing. Admitting to be concerned about FFP. Mario questioned about the mafia and poor Shark face broke his finger.
Not to mention the huge impact Milner and Barry had on the Wales game. With a midfield like that, how can you create chances?

We have improved 100% since that game last year

Aguero's name has dominated Wigan's preparations ahead of the Etihad clash.

perhaps it would have been better to visit the Manchester City web site and seen that Sergio Aguero might not even play due to all the travel, he also arrived back only the other day
it would seem that tevez will start with someone ells up front for this game
how nice to have a top squad of players like never before and rotate like for like
CTID
Top team blue moon is rising
