Jewell's big fear

WIGAN soccer boss Paul Jewell says he'll be glad to see the back of the rugby league season.

Jewell isn't the only person in the blue half of the JJB camp thinking on these lines. His main concern is preserving the pitch.

No more home games for Wigan Warriors is a huge relief to Jewell with winter looming, but Great Britain will play there in November.

The big worry for club bosses on the other hand is the definite need to bolster Latics' gates.

Wigan Warriors played 24 hours before Latics beat Rotherham 2-0 - a 17,000 crowd watched their win over Wakefield.

Just 7,937 cheered Latics on to a victory which left them top of the Championship thanks to goals from Jason Roberts and Alan Mahon. It's the fourth time this term the attendance has been below the 10,000 mark.

Weekend events again showed the Wigan public will only spend their cash watching one of the town's professional clubs. To many, the Super League was obviously more appealing and not for the first time, it left Latics in a hole. Saturday's gate disappointed Jewell.

He said: "There wasn't much atmosphere around the place but it's a win and that's what matters most.

"We were always pretty comfortable. We were the better team throughout and I was pleased to see Alan Mahon on the scoresheet. We do, however, need a better level of support."

Jimmy Bullard shone for Latics with another fine game in midfield.

Wigan are being linked with Preston's former Manchester City youngster Dickson Etuhu with Per Frandsen a long-term injury absentee.

Another unfair mention of Wigan Warriors in the context of a piece on Wigan Athletic. How can you compare our crowd in a run-of-the-mill league fixture against the bottom team in the league with theirs in the top division's play-off semi-final?

Yes there were 10,000 more on for the Wakefield game, but do you honestly think that Wigan Athletic would only have 7,000 on for a play-off match? Last season's attendance of 20,600 against West Ham was higher than any of the Warriors' crowds this season, including their three games against St Helens.

Check your facts before printing such biased nonsense. We get enough knocking copy from our own local paper without the MEN joining in.

Yet again, Wigan Athletic are slated for attracting less fans (allegedly) than the "other" team in the town.

If you are going to compare Football with rugby, then at least have the foresight to compare a like for like game...
Perhaps the last game of last season when the attendance was 20,669. This would compare more with the 400th play off game of the season for the rugby team. (superleague indeed!)
And lo and behold, our crowd was greater.

If you want to look at it in reverse, the Warriors got 7,500 for an early season game against Castleford. Any mention of that anywhere? ...Thought not.

Whether we get 7,000 or 25,000. The people who want to watch the Latics, do so.
