FORMER Manchester City star Gerard Wiekens is one of two Dutch centre halves interesting Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell.

Latics are likely to swoop for Wiekens if ex-Utrecht player Patrick Zwaanswijk fails to impress.

Zwaanswijk has been released by his club and will guest for Latics this weekend on their two-match tour of Holland.

Jewell will run the rule over the 28-year-old defender and is keeping his options open.

Jewell has said he wants to bring in an extra centre half.

Ipswich Town are closely monitoring the situation - they too are interested in Wiekens, who made 195 league and cup appearances for City before being released.

Ipswich boss Joe Royle has already snapped up former Wigan skipper Jason De Vos and could also move for the versatile Wiekens.

Zwaanswijk has played 29 games for Utrecht this term and was a key figure in their Amstel Cup win.

Wigan will play two games in Holland as part of their pre-season preparations.
