THE most disappointed person in Wigan yesterday was Brenda Spencer.

The Latics' chief executive admitted transfer deadline day ended in total frustration after the ambitious club's recruitment plans drew a blank.

Manager Roberto Martinez was wanting to bring in up to three new players but no deals were struck despite a full day of negotiation.

Brenda told MEN Sport: "We were trying extremely hard to bring in three players but nothing materialised.

"It's frustrating when that happens."

Martinez was keen to bring another ex-Swansea player to the DW Stadium - Dutchman Ferre Bode topped his wanted list.

Bode who came close to signing for Derby County last season was keen to link up again with Martinez but a deal could not be struck.

A stumbling block may well have been the fact his former Dutch club Den Haag will demand a 50 per cent fee should Swansea sell him.

Watson loan

The 27-year-old midfielder has also spent a year sidelined after sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury and is at least a month off making a comeback.

Wigan did allow promising Ben Watson to join QPR on loan until January 1.

Watson has still to start a full Premier League game for Wigan.

Fulham and Aston Villa were tentatively linked with Paul Scharner but nothing materialised.

Scharner, however, is still said to be keen on leaving Wigan should the opportunity arise.

Wigan also made an ambitious bid to bring Celtic striker Scott MacDonald to the Premier League.

Celtic were demanding £5m for MacDonald whose representative Willie McKay even discussed the possibility of a 12-month loan deal.

Marlon King may have been offered to Celtic as part of a player-plus-cash deal but this was another blank for Latics.

There were also reports of a move across Glasgow for Rangers striker Kris Boyd but nothing materialised on this front either.

Wigan who have made a poor start to the Premiership season also failed to entice Crystal Palace star Victor Moses who was also interesting Spurs.

What is your verdict on Wigan's squad? Have your say.
