Latics close on Colombian striker

LOOKING TO STRENGTHEN: Steve Bruce
WIGAN Athletic are hoping to complete the £4.5m signing of Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega in the next 48 hours.

Latics' bosses are confident Rodallega, 23, will be granted a work permit and be given the all-clear to join Steve Bruce's side.

Terms have been agreed with his Mexican club side, Nicaea, and he is expected to arrive in Wigan on Wednesday.

Wigan are also linked with Mariusz Lewandowski, the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder.

Steve Bruce is keen to bolster his squad at a time when two of his most high profile players, Emile Heskey and Antonio Valencia, continue to be linked with moves away from the club.

Reports from Spain suggest Valencia still remains a potential target for Real Madrid, while Heskey is linked with Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Heskey is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Bruce is obviously keen for Valencia and Heskey to stay but a final decision will rest with chairman Dave Whelan. Should Wigan receive sizable offers for either player, Whelan may reluctantly decide to sell.

Bruce is also tipped to step up his interest this week in Reading's £5m winger Stephen Hunt, 27, who could be allowed to join a Premier club for a certain figure.

Kevin Kilbane, who skippered Wigan in Friday's FA Cup defeat by Tottenham is understood to be a target for Hull.

Bolton Wanderers have also inquired about Ryan Taylor.

Wigan have allowed forward city striker Antoine Sibierski to join Norwich City following a loan spell at Carrow Road.
