Henri steps in from the cold

Henri Camara
TWO goals in a week have put Henri Camara very much back in the picture at Wigan Athletic.

The club's Senegalese striker has come in from the cold and fired vital goals against Everton and West Brom for Steve Bruce's side.

He was shipped out to West Ham on loan last season and says it was hell but he is now glad to be back in Wigan.

At 31, Camara's real goal is to convince Bruce he is worthy of a new deal.

It's been a remarkable turnaround for Camara who, until he scored against Everton, hadn't hit a Premiership goal since December 9.

He came close to joining Stoke earlier this season but believes his future is at Wigan.

Camara says: "I am keen to sign a new contract with Wigan. We have not yet had talks but I certainly hope to stay and I want to work hard to make sure I stay at the club.

"I feel in the right kind of shape to keep playing Premiership football.

"I have always liked playing for Wigan, the fans shout my name but who knows what the future holds.

Wasted

"I feel I need to make up for lost time at my age and I have to view the last couple of years as being wasted.

"I was not a bad-boy at West Ham but they just did not give me a chance. I trained hard every day and people could not understand why I wasn't playing.

"I asked the manager and he could not give me an answer.

"What happened at West Ham last season destroyed my confidence levels. I did not get the breaks there.

"Football is a confidence thing and I am a goal scorer, that is what I go on the field to do.

"It was not really my decision to go on loan but I took my chance and it was a mistake.

"I came back to Wigan and I have enjoyed working under Steve. I just wanted to chance "I am a confidence player and when I am confident, I can hurt teams. I am working towards that level, the goals have been nice but it is up to me to keep on working hard for the team.

"I do like it at Wigan, I have greatly enjoyed my time here and I do want to stay."

Meanwhile, Emile Heskey appears poised to leave in January following the latest remarks from chairman Dave Whelan.

"Emile is out of contract in the summer, but he doesn't want to sign a new one at the moment," said Whelan.
